Ciena Corporation
[2000 - 2004]
Lead Systems Verification Engineer
Prime Lead in creating test strategies, documents and reports for key release features with customer impact.   Trained product line marketing group on system functionality for directed selling features of product.

Designed Networks using in house power management software, built networks in strategic configurations for testing, and troubleshot defects throughout the design process of new product features.   Verified Optical Power Management Algorithms for each network, working closely with designers to ensure proper equalization, channel powers, and OSNR levels for each component [EDFAs, VOA, Switches, Latches, Line Cards]

Worked with hardware, software, marketing and systems engineering to resolve defects, meet standards, and ensure system integrity through feature testing, legacy, and upgrades.   Presented tutorials to Verification and Lab teams about Routing Protocols (OSPF, RIP, BGP, ISIS), and forward error correcting using Reed solomon Encoding.

Provisioned Circuit Packs, Circuits, Overlays, Trib/Line Protection, and tested alarms, switching, OH[path/line/section] using GUI, TL1, SNMP.   Set up and tested circuits for error free transmission of OC3-OC192 signals, Gigabit Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, to test in link budget testing, stress testing, and long term soaks.

Verified protection architectures in Optical/Sonet UPSR BLSR for valid switch times(50ms-), circuit inter-dependencies, using robustness testing, as well as forced/manual switch and revert techniques.   Lab equipment knowledge with Omniber, Ixia, Gnubi, traffic generators, Anritsu optical spectrum analyzers, JDSU VOA modules, EXFO power modules, wave meters, and all fiber maintenance equipment.

Characterized transient response throughout system, and at the circuit pack level.   Created user accounts, and maintained Oracle database using SQL, for use with multi node network GUI.

Worked with Network Management System to set up subrate circuits (path, line, transparency), and to provision VLans, and networking with TCP/IP, PPP, DCC.   I was trained in the new product introduction [NPI] process, and worked in readying documentation for ISO and Osmine certification.

Directed division documentation and contributed to outlining verification gates in product cycle.

Ceta Research
[Summer 2000]
Systems Field Engineer
Studied the proposed theory of Rhythm Based Communication, and contributed to the theoretical work by introducing mathematical models, and analogies.   Analyzed the field data to expected data, and offered a statistical summary of results including mean, standard deviation, and liklihood of valid theory.

Canada France Hawaii Telescope
[Summer 1999]
Systems Engineer Intern
Re-engineered fiber optic system for the telescope by cleaning existing fiber, re-installing damaged lines, buying measuring equipment, and initiating a web tool to log changes in the equipment.   Drafted the RGB colour plate motor, and colour wheels using AutoCAD 98 light so that they could be rebuilt, and the old ones placed as back up.

Implemented Java based tool for website to track signal level of 'goodness', as well as fiber location, to be used by astronomers in their equipment switches.   Installed new fiber lines at base camp for developers to work on projects from their offices. This involved splicing, and terminating new FC, SC, or FDDI connectors.

Characterized optical transcievers for valid signal input including power, and OSNR.   Implemented documentation and Fiber locator tool using HTML and FLash, to show how to reterminate fiber, measure optical characteristics, and to use maintenance equipment.

Re-routed fiber optic cables from telescope to its servers, and identified the optical integrity of work.   Presented a tutorial on fiber maintenance, fiber repair, and the actions needed to be taken for future use.

OC192 Long Haul
[Winter 1998]
Systems Engineer Intern
Performed the Set Up procedures and Equalizing techniques required for the OC192, and OC48 Long Haul Systems.

Set up was performed with analysis of the Optical Spectrum with Anritsu OSAs and attention to the Optical Signal to Noise ratio recorded for each channel.

Provided testing of the Link Budget characteristics at strategic places around the system where the attenuation on a specific channel would cause BER to occur.   Because of the non linear effects of Erbium Doped Fixed Gain Amplifiers, Equalization played a main role in testing. Equalization was obtained through a painstaking process of external Variable Optical Attenuators VOAs from JDSU.

Two reports were submitted as my final report regarding OC48, and OC192 link budget characteristics.   Monitoring of other circuits was also performed to verify that the degredation of one signal would not cause bit errors on the other circuits.

Global Initiatives
[Fall 1998]
Systems Engineer Intern

This position was a part of the DMS 100 Response Team metrics, and support to track Emergency responses, and the turn around times/ system down times, a metric report was compiled and displayed each month for global customers.

As well as this, I was a major contributor to the ISO process developing guidelines, and documentation on how to perform this task. I published this as a report, as well as a website.

This position was administrative for the most part, and most of my time was spent creating the website and the website elements to present the data.

Nortel Networks
Wireless
[Winter 1997]
Systems Engineer Intern
Programmed, setup, and troubleshot system, using Labview to automate Bit Error Rate testing for the base transciever station using CMD 57 test equipment.   Performed full environmental testing of station in an eco-chamber using thermocouples, and automated log equipment.

Assembled and crimped together all cables for 2 full prototype versions of the wireless station so engineers could begin set up immediately. There had been a delay from the contract work to get the cables completed on time.   Documented results of Labview programming, and wrote report of Environmental testing.

Helped design small circuit to distribute and amplify a T1 clock signal throughout the develoment lab.   Presented Labview programs to managers.
